Opposition councillors called the charges “absolutely astronomical”

Increased car parking charges at West Northamptonshire parks that opposition councillors labelled “absolutely astronomical” will go ahead but will be reviewed after six months. West Northamptonshire Council said the changes, which will cost about £140,000 to implement, will make parking simpler and more convenient for all users.

Other pricier charges will also be rolled out at Brixworth and Daventry country parks after WNC judged current arrangements to be "inconvenient" for people parking there and "vulnerable to abuse and non-payment". WNC said it expects to generate about £176,000 a year through the changes, which will be introduced in April.

It will install an Automatic Number Plate Recognition system at all three sites in the summer. Charges at the country parks will vary from £3 for up to two hours to up to £12 for all day, while at The Racecourse, drivers will need to pay £3.30 for three hours and an evening/overnight ticket will cost £2.20.

But council leader Coun Jonathan Nunn told a cabinet meeting on Tuesday that charges are critical to delivering services. He said: “Every day vulnerable people, old people, young people, people who need temporary accommodation come to us and the way we cover that is partly through council tax but inflation’s 10%. Council tax we can [only] put up to 5% so that doesn’t cut it.
