Moving into a care home after a fall Billy Unsworth often remained his room agitated and not wanting to mix with others. Then staff worked out what was missing in his life and restored it with an inspired move.
Billy was first introduced to the game by a neighbour at his home in Eccles when five-years-old.. His passion for it flourished and in his early adult life, he was taking part in tournaments and collecting trophies up and down the country. Billy, 69, moved into Kenyon Lodge care home in Little Hulton in 2020 after a fall. He spent a lot of time in his room unwilling to socialise.
Knowing Billy’s love of chess through the many books he has in his room, a member of the team downloaded a chess app onto the table and encouraged Billy to have a go. The technology, he has not only been able to reconcile his love for the game but reunite with his old chess-mates.Billy regularly uses the table, playing online tournaments and teaching other residents of the home how to play too.
