Green grids and off-the-shelf EV platforms
's founder, Robin Zeng , has reportedly revealed plans that, if executed, could dramatically increase global battery usage and demand for a range of critical minerals. Zeng told Reuters in an exclusive interview that a strategic pivot would see the world's largest battery producer reinvented as a green energy provider with electric grids big enough to power cities and cost-slashing off-the-shelf electric vehicle platforms.
's own energy storage business outpaced its EV-battery business last year, growing by 33%. Zeng's plan is reportedly to supply green-grid systems, including solar and wind power, dedicated storage and a smart system to draw power from parked EVs. – which is reportedly responsible for 37% of global EV batteries – is also planning a move that could slash the costs of developing EVs, according to Zeng. He told Reuters that the company is planning to offer an EV chassis with a battery capable of running more than 800km on a single charge. While not formally announced by
's headquarters in the Chinese city of Ningde. Reportedly, Porsche has been shown the technology, as have investors in the United Arab Emirates who are keen to start a local brand. Zeng reportedly said the project – code-named "panshi", or "bedrock" in Chinese – could slash the cost of developing a new EV from billions of dollars to just $10 million.
