A coroner issued a stark warning over the dangers of mixing drugs after hearing details of Stephen Leyland's tragic death
An "amazing dad and grandad" who "made the world magical" tragically died due to a lethal mix of drugs, an inquest heard.
Described as a freezing night, he left behind his coat and wallet, and was only wearing a polo shirt. Mr Leyland's daughter, Abbie Leyland, said he told her on the phone he was 'walking towards Wigan hospital', the M.E.N reports. It indicated Mr Leyland climbed over a fence and up an embankment close to the M61 motorway, only to fall back through brambles.
The precise journey Mr Leyland took to end up in Horwich remains unclear. A medical cause of death was given as multiple drug toxicity together with heart disease and hyperthermia. Mr Brennand said: "He was a devoted family man who had much to live for. The evidence is limited to the science. It does not permit me to explain in what quantity, at what time and in what circumstances the drugs were consumed." This was a combination of illicit and prescribed drugs. I am of the view that they were self-ingested."
