Demand for food relief across Western Australia has substantially increased over the past four years and children in regional areas are among those most in need, a report has found.
Committee representative Alan Atchison said the report highlighted the need for the charity to expand.
"Fundraising is a very important part and time is volunteered by locals, services are volunteered and donated," he said.Despite the inquiry making recommendations for the extension and improvement of the school lunch program, Mr Atchison was sceptical about how successful such measures would be. It was recognised in the Hungry for Change report as a dignified way of giving residents access to low-cost or free food."The senior women might come and do a shop for their whole family.Roebourne's Ieramugadu Store Maya provides a key source of cheap food for the Indigenous community.
Mr Stephens said every area would face different challenges, but tweaks could be made to approximate the model elsewhere.
