Suggestions the AUKUS partnership should expand to include Japan and India are a serious concern, China has said.

| China has accused Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States of fuelling military confrontation as the three countries finalise decisions on the acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines under the AUKUS agreement.

Britain’s House of Commons defence select committee this week called for the expansion of the AUKUS trilateral security pact. While Japan and India co-operate with Australia and the US under the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, there are no immediate plans for those two countries to join AUKUS.with their British counterparts in London this week. The AUKUS nuclear submarine pact will feature heavily in discussions, as will Ukraine.

“With the Indo-Pacific’s centrality to global prosperity and security, the cost would extend far beyond us and reach into every region,” she said. “China and Australia are both important countries in the Asia-Pacific. The sound and steady growth of China-Australia relations is in the fundamental interest of our two peoples and conducive to the peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific and beyond,” the spokeswoman said.
