An 86-foot maypole rises over the quaint village's epicentre

Barwick-in-Elmet dates all the way back to the middle ages with its name written in the 1086 Domesday Book. Its name loosely translates to ‘barley farm’.

It is now known for sure when the large pole was erected, but it’s believed to be some time around the early 17th century. Villagers are excited for the upcoming festivities and spoke about what they loved about the village which has a population of about 2,000 and a population of 32.2 per cent older than 65.

Trevor, 80, originally from Burmantofts, has lived in Barwick for more than 25 years. He said: “We liked it so much it became our life’s ambition to live in Barwick, just because it’s such a lovely place to be.
