Taxi drivers say the move to Carrington Street will improve business but still cause many issues for passengers
Nottingham's black cab drivers say a new trial of a taxi rank opposite the railway station's main entrance will improve business - but is likely to continue to cause issues for drivers and passengers. Taxis have returned to Carrington Street as part of the 18-month trial, which began on Monday, February 3, after 10 years of being moved elsewhere.
Since being based on the street, drivers have previously raised issues over the lack of thoroughfare in the area. Recent closures by EMR rail bosses of the side exit and footbridge connecting Station Street to Queens Road on either side of the station have also dramatically increased concerns for cabbies.
"Our original demand was to reinstate the Station Street rank which was established from donkey days. We are still asking for that to be reviewed that rank - that's the solution." "People still aren't sure where to go when they leave the station. I was there for one and a half hours today, and because we are parked right up by the station, it actually creates a blind spot.
Mr Akram says many of the current issues experienced by drivers and passengers in the Carrington Street and Trent Street ranks would be eliminated if the cabbies were able to return to the now-pedestrianised Station Street.
