Nottingham will be trialling a new taxi rank on Carrington Street outside the main entrance of Nottingham railway station. The 18-month pilot, beginning in February, aims to improve accessibility for disabled residents and families with young children. Eight wheelchair accessible spaces will be available on Carrington Street, with an additional eight-space feeder rank in nearby Arkwright Street. Cyclist access will remain unaffected.
Taxi drivers will be able to park on the street outside the main entrance of Nottingham railway station as part of a new trial. Black cabs will make a return to Carrington Street during the 18-month pilot, which begins in February, around 10 years after being moved elsewhere.
Eight wheelchair accessible spaces will be made available on the street, with an eight-space 'feeder' rank also opening in nearby Arkwright Street. Nottingham City Council said the scheme was trying to find a new "permanent safe option" for more spaces outside the station. “Following feedback from disabled residents and residents with young children, we are trialling a new taxi rank close to the front of the station, to improve accessibility," said leader councillor Neghat Khan. "I encourage residents, visitors, and transport users to share their feedback so we can assess the impact of these changes and make informed decisions for the future.”
Markings for the advisory cycle lane will be removed, but the council said cyclists would still be able to use the "quiet route". The new taxi ranks will come into effect on Monday, February 3, while the existing spaces on Trent Street will be reduced and replaced by a new pick up and drop off bay. Once the new rank is open, taxis will be permitted to enter Carrington Street via Arkwright Street and exit via Canal Street, with no U-turns permitted. The current 5-minute waiting bay outside Loxley House will be replaced with a bay for disabled badge holders and a short wheelchair accessible taxi bay.
