This news article follows two Nottinghamshire Police officers on their Friday evening patrol of Nottingham city centre. The officers discuss their role in neighbourhood policing, which involves building rapport with local offenders, solving long-term issues, and apprehending wanted suspects.
It's 5pm on a Friday evening and I'm clambering into a police van. But I haven't committed a crime. Instead, I'm heading out on the beat with two of Nottinghamshire Police's city centre neighbourhood team. 'You tend to build a bit of a rapport with them,' explains PC Phil Yates about some of the centre's most notorious offenders. 'Quite often I'll know their names and know their faces. They're usually quite sound with me. If they see me out and about they'll say hello.
I've not really got any bad blood with any of them. It's a weird relationship.' PC Yates, along with his teammate PC Alice Rennison, are part of the city centre's neighbourhood policing team. Unlike response officers who are sent out to 999 calls, their job is to engage with people in the city, provide a presence and look out for crime. A big part of the remit for the neighbourhood team is 'problem-solving'. Longer-term issues, such as repeat shoplifting offenders, are also their jobs, as is hunting down a wanted suspect - which PC Yates admits is his favourite part of the job. There's no infra-red camera or technical equipment. It's as simple as the power of the trained eye. 'A lot of them are creatures of habit,' says PC Yates. 'They tend to hang around in the same places and with the same people. 'I do like to go out and try and find them. If you succeed, you get a little bit of a buzz. I don't like coming back empty-handed.' Our first stop is the Sainsbury's on the corner of Carlton Street and Fletcher Gate in the city centre. PC Yates says while he was walking to work, he spotted a notorious wanted man in a yellow coat lingering around outside the store. Off duty, with no radio and on his own, he made the decision not to act at the time when he saw him. Now, he'll see if he's about again, and arrest him if he is there. On the way, as the wheels trundle over the tram tracks, PC Yates keeps an eye out for other possible offender
