The Bendigo Building on the corner of Bath Street and Brook Street, on the city centre's border with Sneinton and St Ann's, stood vacant for 20 years after Royal Mail vacated the premises in 2002
Nottingham's ugliest building that was left empty for 20 years has been reduced to a crater in preparation for the area's new future. .
The building was named after the famous 19th-century boxer, William ‘Bendigo’ Thompson, and was once voted the city's ugliest building. But now the once-imposing 1960s sorting office has been reduced to a barren space as construction workers ready the site for its new future as a 13-storey block student block.
Demolition started late last year after asbestos was removed from the frequently vandalised building. Godwin Developments, which was the applicant for the student scheme, sold the approved scheme back in April 2022 to Bricks Group, which then reduced the planned bed spaces from 692 to 661.
A ‘cave probing’ investigation had to be undertaken to check for the ancient caves the city is famed for underneath the development site during the demolition.
