Whistleblowers have alleged that government policy papers are being produced with the assistance of artificial intelligence.

Civil servants are using artificial intelligence to help produce government policy documents, whistleblowers have claimed. The sources have told the Sunday Mail the AI app ChatGPT is being used regularly by staff across multiple departments to do their work.

“We are allowed to use it but there are guidelines and actual policy is not supposed to be written using it but I don’t think these rules are being adhered to at all times. You have hundreds of staff working from home and they can vastly increase the amount of free time that they have by exploiting ChatGPT to its full potential.

A Scottish Government spokesperson said: “In the Scottish Government, policy advice is not being generated using AI but administrative tasks supporting policymakers can be, provided no sensitive information is being shared externally.
