The audit is in response to the cronyism allegations which erupted this month, including the case of the Labour donor Ian Corfield, who was given a Civil Service job in the Treasury after Keir Starmer’s election victory. He then stepped down from the Civil Service role and is now a temporary unpaid adviser to the Treasury.Lady Stuart wrote to all Whitehall departments on Friday saying she would be carrying out a review of “all appointments made by exception” – those which do not conform to Civil Service laws on recruitment taking place “on merit on the basis of fair and open competition” – between 1 July and 31 August.
