The government has backed Greater Manchester's plans

No Clean Air Zone charges will be introduced in Greater Manchester, the government has confirmed, ending a three-year saga.

But Andy Burnham argued that the plans to cut pollution which were made before the pandemic would no longer work due to rising costs prohibiting drivers from upgrading their vehicles. The government agreed to delay the deadline by which pollution must be cut. The government has now concluded that Greater Manchester's new Clean Air Plan will meet legal obligations to reduce nitrogen dioxide . The plan includes introducing 117 new lower and zero-emission buses and giving cabbies £8m to upgrade their vehicles.

Air Quality Minister Emma Hardy said: “Air pollution is damaging people’s health and the environment. Its impacts are felt more by low-income communities, making health and social inequalities worse. To improve our health, wellbeing and the environment, we must improve air quality.

"We will continue to work with local leaders to create better connected communities, meet our climate targets and make Britain a clean energy superpower as part of our Plan for Change.
