A Derbyshire man, Joe Peall, has spearheaded a successful fundraising campaign to purchase The Polygon Centre, a community hub in Alfreton, from auction. With the support of the local community, he raised over £75,000, exceeding the asking price and aiming to secure its future as a valuable resource.
A Derbyshire man believes he is just a few steps away from "saving" a valuable community hub from being sold at auction after raising a staggering amount of money with the help of the community. It comes after Alfreton man, Joe Peall, noticed a listing for The Polygon Centre, an unusual building on Church Street, back in September.
He has written an open letter for residents to sign, formally urging Derbyshire County Council to accept the bid submitted to purchase the building, with hopes it can remain a "community hub" for the town and the wider area. "The Polygon Centre has historically been a vital youth centre, providing a safe and supportive space for young people in Alfreton," said Joe, lead campaigner for the Save The Polygon Centre initiative.
"By supporting our bid, Derbyshire County Council can continue with their work of empowering communities to take the lead in shaping their own futures. I have been blown away by the support and success of the campaign, but I can hardly say I am surprised. Derbyshire County Council has now issued a statement, saying it is in "very positive dialogue" with several parties over the sale of the building. A spokesperson for the authority said: "The Polygon Centre has been declared an Asset of Community Value by Amber Valley Borough Council and we have notified them of our intention to sell the building.
