The Singapore Grand Prix confirmed temporary track changes from 2023 due to developments next to the circuit. The change made to the track is the bypass of turn 16, 17, 18, and 19. Instead it will be a straight that goes up to what is currently turn 20. This change also means the removal of the Bay Grandstand until the redevelopment is complete.
This temporary modification is due to the redevelopment of the Float at Marina Bay into the National Service Square. The redevelopment is set to start in March 2023 and is expected to be done by the near-end of 2026. The revised circuit layout will have 19 turns instead of its 22 and the track length is to be cut by 137 meters to a total of 4.928km. Due to the shorter length, the lap count will increase from 61 to 63 laps to meet the minimum race distance requirement of 305km.
According to simulations done with 2020 F1 cars, the best running lap time around the new circuit layout could beWith these timings, the lap time is expecting a drop of around 20 seconds.1:49.412s, set by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Though this time was set during not-so-ideal conditions, the proposed changes will still make the cars significantly faster.
However, these changes are still subject to formal approval by the FIA, and are expected to come in the coming months.
