This week lawmakers went a step further and passed a data-privacy bill stopping certain companies from selling information to 'foreign adversary' countries.

Many reports have highlighted the extent to which China uses TikTok to spy on adversaries. One former employee of ByteDance outlined in a court filing last year specific claims that the Chinese Communist Party accessed data of TikTok users on a broad scale, CNNTikTok has long dismissed these claims, with company executives arguing Beijing does not have access to the app's data. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew testified in front of Congress last year and reiterated the company's position.
