Construction begins on a pedestrian bridge over Lady Bird Lake in Austin, connecting the north and south shores via a peninsula, funded by a $4.12 million federal grant and set to impact trail access starting July 1. at the east end of the hike and bike trail around Lady Bird Lake . The bridge will keep trail users off Pleasant Valley Road and Longhorn Dam as they cross over the lake.
Right now they're calling it Wishbone Bridge because of its shape. The bridge will connect the north and south shores of the lake with the unnamed peninsula that also connects to the north shore. This was all proposed years ago. Funding for the bridge design came from the 2016 mobility bonds. But funding for the bridge construction didn't come through until just this past April. That's when U.S. Congressman Greg Casar announced the City of Austin will receive a $4.12 million grant for the project.
Beginning July 1 trail users will notice fencing going up around the areas impacted by the construction. And beginning July 8 neighbors near Longhorn Dam will lose access to Canterbury Park and the nearby peninsula.Beginning July 1, trail users will notice fencing being installed around the planned construction areas of Canterbury Park, Longhorn Shores and Krieg Fields. The public will still have full access to Krieg Fields during construction. but Longhorn Shores will be closed to the public.
