Coronation Street star Sue Cleaver bravely shared her experience with sepsis, revealing how it served as a life-changing wake-up call. During a recent appearance on ITV's Loose Women, Sue discussed the seriousness of the illness and how it motivated her to prioritize her life and make changes.
Coronation Street star Sue Cleaver has opened up about a past health battle, revealing that it served as a much-needed wake-up call . The 61-year-old appeared on ITV 's Loose Women on Thursday, February 6th, alongside fellow celebrities Christine Lampard, Judi Love, and Kelle Bryan. The panel discussed Davina McCall's recent interview with Steven Bartlett and his recovery after brain tumor surgery, reflecting on how a serious health scare can alter one's perspective.
Joining the conversation, Sue, who previously experienced sepsis, shared her own story. 'I found myself very poorly a few years ago and was in intensive care,' she said. 'I think when anything like that happens, there are two ways to go, isn't there?' Sue continued, 'I was very shocked by it, but what it did for me is it gave me a little poke and helped me make the decision as I'm leaving Corrie now, but it was one of the instances that made me wake up and go 'life is too short.' You never know what's round the corner and what you'll be facing so don't put off things.' She added, 'It did galvanise me into making changes in my life and I promised myself that I was going to live fearlessly.' Known for playing Eileen Grimshaw on Corrie since 2000, Sue has previously spoken openly about her sepsis battle, initially mistaking it for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). In 2019, she shared her experience on This Morning, revealing that she first felt ill while at work. 'My husband, who also works on Corrie was on a night shift. He rang me and said he couldn’t hear what I was saying because my teeth were chattering so much,' she recalled. 'He rang our daughter-in-law who’s a paramedic and she said, 'get her to hospital'. I didn’t know I had sepsis until the next day in the ward. I was immediately on fluids and antibiotics.' After her diagnosis, doctors began treatment within the critical one-hour window. The NHS states that sepsis requires immediate attention as it can worsen rapidly, leading to septic shock, which can cause organ failure and become life-threatening.
