Tucked down Old Bank Street just off of St Ann’s Square you’ll find Annie’s, the restaurant and tea room co-owned by Jennie McAlpine, who has played Fiz Dobbs in Coronation Street since 2001
As Manchester negotiates its way into autumn, many of us head for the great indoors. The warm summer days now feel like a distant memory, but there’s something quite appealing about hunkering down this time of year.
, and her partner Chris Farr. Since opening in 2012 the pair have gone on to win a clutch of awards for the venue including People’s Choice award for best tea room at the Manchester Tourism Awards for its range of Afternoon Teas. However, we tend to focus a lot on the new openings. And while they're certainly worth shouting about, it’s also important to give attention to the businesses, that despite the challenges of the last few years, have not only survived, but thrived.
So entering Annie’s felt a little different. Stepping into what felt like someone’s front room - though most won’t have chandeliers and plush, button-backed armchairs - we noticed it was awfully quiet. The soothing hum of Michael Bublé's vocals could just about be heard coming through the speakers, but there were no customers.
Resoundingly Northern, but with a contemporary streak, starters like corned beef hash cake and Bury black pudding and halloumi sit alongside southern fried chicken goujons and spicy breaded king prawns. Though this will most likely remain a pipe dream of mine, we were glad to see Annie's has there own take on the traditional hotpot too. Beautifully presented, crispy potatoes like a fan unfurling topped the succulent lamb bubbling away beneath it.
