Boris Johnson leads last daily Covid-19 briefing tonight after lockdown update

Plans to keep indoor gyms and spas closed while other businesses such as pubs reopen as lockdown is eased have been branded “completely illogical” by industry bosses.

Glenn Earlam, chief executive of David Lloyd Clubs, told the PA news agency it was a “completely illogical” move.Low transmission rates in the UK mean there is “little chance” of trials in the country proving the effectiveness of a coronavirus vaccine, a scientist leading a UK trial has said. In a statement, the company said: “We understand that these decisions are not easy, but it is a strange 'war on obesity' that sees pubs and restaurants open before gyms.

“We urgently call on the Prime Minister to re-examine the evidence, engage with us and our industry bodies, and allow people back into gyms as soon as possible.”New coronavorus lockdown measures have been announced in Germany after an increase in cases linked to an abattoir. Responding, Boris Johnson said: “We want enhanced, greater testing and more immediate testing and more efficient testing for those high-contact groups.

Blended learning – where pupils have a combination of face-to-face teaching in schools and home learning – will be the Government's “contingency” if it is deemed unsafe for schools to reopen without social distancing.
