Adam Johnson died after being hit in the neck by an opponent's skate during a game between Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers
The coroner examining the death of Nottingham Panthers player Adam Johnson has issued an update on her investigation. Johnson died on October 28 last year after being hit in the neck by an opponent's skate during a match against Sheffield Steelers.
His death led to a huge outpouring of grief in the ice hockey world and tributes were paid at games to mark the first anniversary of his death last month. Sheffield’s senior coroner Tanyka Rawden opened an inquest into Mr Johnson’s death last year but it was suspended in January as a man remains on bail having been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.
A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said "there aren't any updates" on the criminal investigation when Nottinghamshire Live contacted the force. Despite the inquest opening in November being very brief, Ms Rawden issued a Prevention of Future Deaths Report to Ice Hockey UK and the English Ice Hockey Association backing Nottinghamshire Live's calls for the use of neck guards to be mandatory in the sport.
