Mescaline, the hallucinogenic substance in some cacti, is illegal to use. But with the recent medical approval of other similar psychedelics, this scientist wants more research on the plant.
communication scientist, Dr Engel is interested in the plant for its psychoactive substance, mescaline, which occurs naturally in them.
"There's all these interesting community experts, people that aren't formal researchers, but still have some really amazing knowledge behind them," Mr Engel said. He said mescaline affected the body similarly to MDMA and psilocybin, otherwise known as magic mushrooms, but the impact was more grounded than magic mushrooms.
