Three venues across West Lancashire are focus of change
A council is facing a £13m shortfall in plans to build two new leisure centre - and says it may have to bring forward plans to close existing facilities.
The report states: "The council has approved a series of reports to support the development of new well-being and leisure hubs to replace the Nye Bevan and Park Pool centres. They are around 50 years old and at the end of their useful lives. Designs for new hubs have been drawn-up to Royal Institute of British Architects technical design stage 4 and planning approval hasBut it adds: "There have been concerns over the potential financial viability of the new hubs for some time.
West Lancashire Council "remains committed to investment in its leisure facilities" the report stresses and this is shown with the current Burscough sports centre refurbishment. Work is due be complete by January 2025. Existing centres Regarding the existing Nye Bevan and Park Pool centres, the report says the need to replace these has been recognised for some time. The buildings are around 50 years old and at the end of their useful lives, it argues. Due to their age, they offer poor quality services and so their usage has reduced and is relatively low compared to modern facilities.
