The high street is a big employer in our county

Nottinghamshire County Council said it is prepared to offer support to hundreds of Wilko employees after the firm entered administration. The high street giant, which is headquartered in Worksop, has more than 400 stores and employs 12,000 people across the UK.

The company announced it was going into administration on Thursday, August 10, leaving many staff members and customers fearing the worst for the future of the business and its employees. Approximately 2,000 people are employed at the headquarters in Worksop. Nottinghamshire County Councillor Reg Adair, Deputy Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Asset Management, said: “This is really awful news and must be a very difficult time for employees and their families who of course will be worrying about the future of their jobs.

“Wilko is a much-loved Notts-based retailer. It is the cornerstone of the local high street across Notts and many parts of the country and so those of us who have shopped there for years will be concerned about its future. We hope that better news is on its way and that there will be other opportunities for a buy-out to help save jobs and support our economy.

“We are already discussions with Bassetlaw District Council, other partners and supporting agencies. As the situation evolves, we are keen to be ready to see what employment help and support can be offered as needed, particularly should the worse-case scenario happen.”
