A couple who left Liverpool to run a pub in Anglesey have been forced to leave after just five months. Darren and Susie Harris-Hughes claim they were given a week's notice by brewery Marston's, despite revamping the pub and receiving positive feedback from villagers.
A couple say they are devastated after they 'gave up everything' and left Liverpool to run a pub in Anglesey - only to have to leave five months later. Darren and Susie Harris-Hughes said they had reluctantly accepted a week's notice from brewery Marston's to vacate the Stag Inn in Cemaes, a decision that has sparked anger among some regulars including the pub's pool team, who have pledged to boycott the establishment.
Villagers credit Darren and Susie, originally from West Derby , with revitalising the pub in the months since they sold their home to make the move to Anglesey. An online petition calling for the couple to be allowed to stay gathered nearly 400 signatures within 24 hours, and currently has more than 600. The pair gave up their lives in Liverpool to make the move back in July. Darren had worked as a decorator while Susie had a job in the care sector. Recalling seeing the pub for the first time, Susie told the ECHO : 'When we found this pub, we fell in love with it immediately - it was really olde worlde. It needed loads of work and we knew that.' The 52-year-old claims that problems began to arise in September, when a stock-take carried out by an independent third-party auditor showed a deficit amounting to £1,600. Susie said: 'When I came back, I asked the auditor if he was alright and he said he wasn’t and that we were £1,600 down. 'I just dropped the shopping. I said: ‘No, no, no, no, no. That’s totally incorrect and there’s absolutely no way in the world that we are £1,600 down.’ How were we so good for three months and then this? Alarm bells began going off in my head. 'I sat down with the auditor and asked him to tell me where he was finding these losses. We were told we were 10 bottles of Jack Daniel’s down, which is impossible because we didn’t even order 10 bottles of Jack Daniel’s in that month. He also said we were down three bottles of Amarett
