A couple on trial accused of murder wanted to ‘maim’ and ‘disfigure’ a dad who was shot dead and then doused in acid, a trial has heard. Liam Smith, 38, was found dead outside his home in Wigan after being shot in the face before having sulfuric acid and then soda crystals poured on him, a jury has been told.
As the trial entered a third week, the jury was read a transcript of a ‘covert’ audio recording obtained in prison featuring Mr Hillier, which was captured in February. In the conversation, he said: “We both wanted him to suffer, you know what I mean, it wasn’t the intention for him to end up dead. “So I feel massively lied to and betrayed.” Mr Hillier said: “It's all going to come back to bite me because like she helped me get back, she helped me get rid of evidence. The first time I went there I went to hers afterwards and stayed there.
"But now she is trying to save her own bacon and stuff and it's on me. I have to plead not guilty to murder, and if I get found for that I will get absolutely f***** hung man. "She hasn't stuck to the plan at all. She has kind of like half thrown me to the wolves and half not. "She has given a well bizarre version of the rape. I have got no doubt in my mind that she was raped but I don't know which version to believe anymore.
