BREAKING: Covid vaccine 'may be less effective against new variant' as UK cases hit 37
Vaccines may be less effective against a new strain of coronavirus in the UK, early evidence suggests.
The strain, also called B.1.621 but has not yet been given a name by the World Health Organisation, was designated a ‘variant under investigation’ on July 21. Public Health England said there is early evidence to suggest vaccination and antibodies from previous infection may be less effective against this variant – but stressed the data is limited and more research is required.
‘Vaccination is the best tool we have in keeping ourselves and our loved ones safe from the serious disease risk COVID-19 can pose.
