12,000 people were expected at the festival this evening to watch Paul Smith
Crowds gathered at the Pier Head enjoying beautiful late-afternoon weather as the On the Waterfront festival kicked off.
Paul shot to fame as a resident comedian at the Hot Water Comedy Club and has gone on to become one of the biggest comics in the UK. He recently finished a sell-out arena tour, including a show at the M&S Arena.Fans were allowed in early to watch England's draw with Denmark live on the big screen, with deckchairs laid out on the grass for sunbathing.
Ian Hale from Flint in North Wales said:"The audience participation is part of the attraction. It's all off the cuff. He's so funny." The musical part of On the Waterfront will start tomorrow, June 21, with rock band Ocean Colour Scene playing. DJ and producer Ben Helsmley will bring his electronic stylings on Saturday, June 22, while legendary multi-platinum-selling Deacon Blue will close the festival on Sunday, June 23.
