The victim, who denies the accusations, was driven to contemplate suicide due to Hatton's relentless threats. Hatton's lawyer, Ian Morris, stated that she felt the victim should be held accountable for the alleged abuse.
However, Judge Abigail Hudson condemned Hatton's actions, stating that reducing a personal matter to financial gain was 'astonishing'. She emphasized that Hatton's threats caused profound distress and damage to the victim, who feared for his safety and agreed to pay £250 to Hatton's friend. The victim subsequently reported the incident to the police. Hatton was found guilty of blackmail and sentenced to 16 months at Bolton Crown Court. Judge Hudson expressed concern about Hatton's lack of remorse and her tendency to judge others without humility. She warned that Hatton's behavior could recur, emphasizing the need for custodial sentences to deter such threats. The Judge stressed that blackmail, particularly in such a horrendous manner, is 'wholly unacceptable and inexcusable'. Hatton's lawyer argued that her imprisonment would negatively impact her two teenage children and her dog grooming business, but the Judge remained firm in her sentencing.
