With demand increasing for electricity, and the ever-present potential for storms or intentionally destructive acts against major electric suppliers, it makes sense to establish small-scale power systems that work independently when outages occur.

Cuyahoga Green Energy Administrator Mike Foley recently spoke to the Middleburg Heights Streets Committee about establishing microgrids in the city to generate electricity.MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio -- With demand increasing for electricity, and the ever-present potential for severe storms or destructive acts against major electric suppliers, it makes sense to establish small-scale power systems that work independently when outages occur.

“The idea behind Cuyahoga Green Energy is to build in more clean energy resiliency and affordable electricity … for the industrial/commercial/manufacturing districts that we’ve identified,” he said. “If the power goes down, we’ll be able to keep power up for a number of hours to a number of days,” he emphasized. “It depends on what the customers’ needs are.”

A three-party agreement would be executed among the county, the LLC created for the microgrid and the customers who take power from the microgrid.
