The Met Office has issued a ‘danger to life’ weather warning as Storm Malik lashes the UK with powerful 80mph gales.
Travel disruption is likely with some roads and bridges expected to close, as people are warned to brace themselves for long delays.
And dog owners in coastal areas have also been urged to protect their pets’ eyes over fears they could be permanently blinded on the beach by the ‘equivalent of a ‘sand-blasting machine’.Pet care website Vetuk.co.uk advises people to take their pooches to pebble-only beaches if strong winds are forecast.‘You might venture on to the beach and think it’s not particularly windy, but try putting your head on the floor next to the sand and you’ll experience things from a different perspective.
Met Office chief meteorologist, Paul Gunderson, said: ‘For those in the north of the UK there will be high winds and rain on Saturday, with showers possibly turning wintry in the high ground of the north. ‘The highest winds are expected in exposed coastal areas in the north and east of Scotland, but it will be a windy day for most.’
In England and Wales, patchy rain is expected to gradually clear southwards allowing the sun to break through.
