Victorian MPs will receive a 3.5 per cent pay rise from July 1 which will boost backbench MPs pay to almost $200,000 and Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews pay to more than $481,000.
Victorian Liberal leader John Pesutto says Victoria’s Independent Remuneration Tribunal needs an overhaul after awarding “massive pay rises” to politicians during a cost of living crisis.
“We don’t set our own pay – that’s a change [the government] made,” Mr Andrews said last year after the tribunal awarded a 2.75 per cent pay rise.“There was a time when politicians set their own pay and we took steps to change that. We stand by those decisions,” he told reporters. “The Greens have consistently argued politicians’ pay rises shouldn’t exceed the public sector wage cap,” Victorian Greens’ leader Samantha Ratnam said.Small business chief Bill Lang called on MPs to donate the pay rise. The Victorian head of the Community and Public Sector Union, Karen Batt, also criticised the rise.
“We want to make sure Victorians who are doing it really tough ... are not going to look at politicians getting massive pay rises,” he said on Wednesday.
