Plans for the improvements have been discussed for more than six years

A date for the start of long-awaited work on a controversial junction in Mansfield has finally been set. News that work on the A60 junction will start in a year's time and be completed in early 2026 has delighted councillors who have been campaigning for more than six years to get changes to what has been described as a "no-go area" at busy times.

South Mansfield county councillor Andre Camilleri said that the "necessary funds have been secured, and preliminary surveys have already been conducted". He added: “This is fantastic news. The leader of Nottinghamshire County Council and former Mansfield MP Ben Bradley has dedicated six years to secure this development, and it's gratifying to finally have firm timelines for the completion of the work.

The scheme, which will see the upgrade of the notorious junction outside a Sainsbury's supermarket, has been costed at £5.8 million and will include some negotiations with the supermarket giant to acquire some land to make the scheme work. It was announced earlier this year that the Government was giving £2 million of levelling up funding for upgrades to be made to the junction on Nottingham Road.

Council leader Mr Bradley, who recently announced he is stepping down from the role, said: "An upgrade to the Sainsbury's junction is a priority and is something I know residents and businesses are very keen to see. I've been working to secure the funding for this for many years, so I'm delighted things are now moving to the next stage so we can make these planned junction improvements a reality.
