In his first interview since being appointed Antrim manager, Davy Fitzgerald insists he was happy to take a break from hurling before a delegation led by Antrim chair Seamus McMullan came knocking

Taking Antrim’s Corrigan Park form down south has been identified as an immediate priority by Davy Fitzgerald as he takes charge of the Saffrons.

“I suppose it’s something completely different. As I said, I was genuinely ok. The first number of weeks I left Waterford, I was actually happy. I was happy not to be doing anything. While the logistics will be challenging, with a seven-hour round trip from his base in Sixmilebridge, the option of overnighting in the north-east between sessions will be explored in due course.

“You’d love to see Antrim hit one of the big knockout stages and bring a massive crowd from the Glens down, from Antrim down to bring venues. That’s what you’d like to see happening. “I’d like to envisage that we would be very, very competitive. Antrim’s away form has to be way more consistent. They’ve shipped big beatings away and if we can bring some of the home form they showed away then they’ll be a challenge for anyone.”
