Kevin De Bruyne took issue with his Belgium team-mates after their 2-0 defeat to France and aired his frustrations publicly - but the Man City ace has been criticised for not protecting them
Kevin De Bruyne has been accused of “going too far” in criticising his Belgium team-mates following a 2-0 defeat to France - but his team-mates refused to comment on his controversial interview.
READ MORE: 'It's over' - Man City star Kevin De Bruyne launches angry rant amid latest retirement hintAs reported by French publication Le Figaro, the Belgium captain said: "What do we need to improve? I really can't say that in front of the media. I used to say what I thought out loud when I was 18 at Genk, but I don't do that anymore at 33. I spoke my mind in the dressing room at half time.
It followed Belgium's hugely disappointing showing in the Euro 2024 group stages, after which they suffered a last-16 exit with a 1-0 defeat - again to France. De Bruyne's comments only add to the developing crisis surrounding the Belgium national team's decline. One thing is clear - De Bruyne's brutal words had an immediate effect. The tension was palpable on the return journey to Brussels airport according to Le Soir, with players and staff travelling back to their clubs in silence.
National team head coach Domenico Tedesco confirmed he had spoken to De Bruyne post-match. He empathised with De Bruyne's competitive spirit but suggested the playmaker may have spoken hastily with adrenaline from the game still pumping.
