The Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center relies on volunteers to offer some programming for youth in the jail.
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland youth accused of serious crimes can spend days to months in the detention center as their cases move through juvenile court, but while they await potential punishment officials want to use that time to rehabilitate and divert them from future involvement.
“We’re showing them there are other things out there to keep them busy,” Wainwright said. “We have to open their eyes to multiple options that are out there, so they’re not going back and just falling into the same activities.” Some also teach about financial literacy or starting a new business. The program Writers in Residence teaches creative writing to youth who are incarcerated, and there was talk, last year, of someone starting a journalism program.
Volunteers must be over age 21 and pass a background check, though Petty says a prior felony does not necessarily preclude applicants from being accepted. Volunteers are always supervised during their visits.
