Shoppers at Piggly Wiggly were greeted by a unique sight: young women from across the country, part of the Distinguished Young Women program, working at the cash registers, bagging groceries, and even serving coffee.
) - This initiative is part of a special partnership between the local grocery store and the nonprofit.
“We’re excited today to partner with Piggly Wiggly,” said Carole Hegwood. “They are allowing us to come today and earn tips for scholarships.”“Mobile has been a great supporter of ours,” shared Hegwood. “We love the community coming out and supporting us and it certainly allows us to pursue our mission which is to encourage leadership, scholarship and talent and let these young women go pursue their dreams in college.
Iwashita has been involved with the program since last year and says today’s activity was something she’s never done before. “I’m really looking forward to talking to people, the customers that come into this store,” said Iwashita. “I think that’s just going to be really cool because we’re always told that we’re gonna be like celebrities here in Mobile. And so I just am so excited to interact with people.”“So I actually knew a former Distinguished Young Woman from West Virginia,“ said Adkins. “She danced at my same dance school. So she really recommended the program to me.
