A Manchester MP is spearheading a campaign for mandatory minimum sentences for those who breach protective orders after her sister's family were tragically impacted by domestic violence. The MP's nephew witnessed his father murder his mother when he was just four years old.
These were the chilling words uttered by a four-year-old boy after watching his dad murder his mum at their home in Droylsden, 13 years ago. Ian Lowe smashed his way into the house on Mellor Street and stabbed Leanne McNuff, 24, to death in front of their child.
Caroline, a 44-year-old cleaner from Wigan, was stabbed to death by her abusive ex-partner at her flat on the Scholes estate in October 2023. It came just weeks after David Liptrot, 56, was spared jail for breaching a restraining order against Caroline again. "The trauma of such violence doesn’t end with the act itself; its effects ripple through families and communities, causing ongoing emotional suffering."
The alleged assault, which happened when Lowe knew she was pregnant with their second child, led to the final split between the couple and led Leanne to have an abortion without telling him, ten days before her death. On the day he smashed his way into her home and killed her, he 'hacked' into her Facebook account and read a message in which she confided in a friend about the abortion.
The court would later hear that the boy, who had witnessed the violence, begged his grandmother to help Leanne, saying 'Can you help Mummy, Nana', before he was taken to a neighbour's house. Margaret tried to perform CPR on her daughter - but it was too late.
