Storing food items correctly in the refrigerator can significantly impact their freshness and shelf life. Scott Evans, a storage expert, advises against storing milk and juice in the fridge door due to its warmer temperature, which can cause spoilage. He recommends keeping these items on the bottom shelf for optimal preservation. Evans also suggests storing items that can withstand temperature fluctuations, such as condiments and drinks, in the fridge door.
The quest for better food storage often leads to cramming the weekly groceries into the fridge. However, overstuffing is not only inconvenient but storing items in incorrect locations can also be detrimental to food safety and lead to increased waste. Fresh and chilled foods require a consistent temperature to prevent spoiling, yet many of us might be making an easily avoidable error with where we store fruit juice and milk.
Scott Evans, a storage expert and boss of Pink Storage, has highlighted some top fridge tips to keep your edibles fresh for longer while saving cash. Mastering your fridge's layout also inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria, preserving your food and drink's quality. Modern fridges typically feature versatile shelving and specific sections for salads, along with handy compartments in the doors for easy access. These spots are where many of us tend to stash our juices, milk, eggs, condiments, and other staples, reports the Express. But Scott warns that the door's variable temperatures can make perishables go off sooner than one might anticipate. He said: 'The door of the fridge seems the perfect place to keep your eggs, milk, and juices as they often have compartments for them, but due to the fridge door being the warmest in temperature, it will cause them to spoil quicker.' Rather than stashing your fresh dairy and juices in the door, it's advised to keep these items on the bottom shelf of the fridge, where the temperature is more stable. Milk, for instance, can last up to seven days when stored on this shelf, compared to just four to five days when placed in the door. If you're wondering what to store in the fridge door, opt for items that can handle temperature fluctuations, such as bottled water, ketchup, mayonnaise, salad dressings, jams, and fizzy drinks. This simple swap could help extend the lifespan of your fresh produce and dairy items, reducing waste and enhancing food safety in your kitchen
