A new season of Swan Lake is stretching Australian Ballet stars to the limit.

, artistic director David Hallberg asks two of his principal artists: “If you had to choose Odette or Odile, who would you choose?” It’s an intriguing question, and one that is at the heart of Hallberg’s new rendition of Anne Woolliams’ production ofThe story, based on Russian and German folk tales, pits good against evil in the form of the innocent Princess Odette and her evil doppelganger, Odile.

Principal artist Amber Scott takes on the challenge for the Melbourne season. “Every shape you make is a swan’s body,” she says. “Every part of you is stretching and reaching.” Then she adds, with a chuckle: “I’m certainly feeling it in my body at the moment.”Shortly after taking over as artistic director in 2021, and beginning to plan this year’s 60th birthday season, Hallberg knew he wanted the company to have a traditional, classicalin its repertoire.

For Scott, who has been in the company for 22 years, 12 as a principal, Odette/Odile is, quite literally, her swansong; she will retire at the end of the ballet’s Melbourne run. Meanwhile, she says, it’s impossible to choose between Odette and Odile. “I think I’ve always felt that this role is one,” she says. “I couldn’t pick one – it’s like two sides of the coin.”
