Dr. Hilary Jones, a renowned TV doctor, cautions Britons about the detrimental health effects of ultra-processed foods (UPFs). He emphasizes the need to reduce UPF consumption to mitigate the long-term risks of chronic diseases and improve overall health.

Dr. Hilary Jones , a well-known television doctor appearing on programs like Good Morning Britain and Lorraine, is sounding the alarm about the dangers of ultra-processed foods (UPFs). He urges Britons to decrease their reliance on UPFs to safeguard their long-term health. A recent Gousto study reveals that 60% of Britons are unaware of the potential long-term health consequences associated with these foods.

The study projects a concerning future by 2055, where excessive UPF consumption and a decline in fresh, nutrient-rich ingredients could lead to a surge in type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, intra-abdominal fat accumulation, as well as increased rates of anxiety and depression. Dr. Hilary expressed his concern to OK! saying, 'There's a lot of momentum building now after several decades of us relying more on ultra-processed foods, and I think it's becoming clearer and clearer with every bit of evidence that's published.' He highlights that the average person currently consumes 60% of their calories from UPFs, a statistic that coincides with the alarming rise in obesity rates and related health issues like heart disease and diabetes. While UPFs might be tempting due to their convenience and appealing taste, it's crucial to understand the potential detrimental effects excessive intake could have on our bodies in the long run. Dr. Hilary points to a groundbreaking meta-analysis published in the British Medical Journal in February, which analyzed studies involving over 10 million people. This analysis identified 32 adverse health conditions associated with UPF consumption, including an increased risk of mortality from various causes, breast cancer, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, sleep disturbances, anxiety, asthma, hypertension, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, metabolic syndrome, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and high blood sugar. He emphasizes the need to be mindful of our dietary choices and prioritize healthier options. Dr. Hilary also offers practical advice on making healthier swaps, suggesting alternatives like apples, celery sticks, or carrot sticks instead of biscuits, cakes, or chocolate bars. He encourages increasing fiber intake, recommending around 30 grams per day, which is significantly lower than the current average of 20 grams. Dr. Hilary stresses the importance of understanding food labels and making informed decisions to prioritize our well-being
