With plans to demolish the massive student halls submitted, we look back at the BOP and other memorable moments at Owens Park

Built to house over 1,000 students, Owens Park Tower in Fallowfield's days are numbered after The University of Manchester submitted a planning application to tear down the 19-storey tower. Built in 1964, the massive halls of residence has seen countless students call it home through the years including Radiohead guitarist Ed O'Brien, the late comedian Rik Mayall and stand-up comic Jack Whitehall.

"The student village – to be known as Owens Park after the founder of Manchester University John Owens – will provide a new type of student living, which is expected to be copied all over the country. It will be run like an hotel with a manager, catering officer, matron, and staff of 200 to care for the undergraduates."

BOP nights started in the mid-'80s and were notoriously wild nights, often with a theme with many attending in fancy dress. As long as you had a student card, and were patient enough to endure the snaking queues outside, you could come to the BOP. "I'm sure I heard mention of up to 1,000 but that would have been an awful lot for a room of that size. But when you come to take all the bars downstairs and the room and all the areas maybe you can get to that.

On her visit to Owens Park BOP night, journalist Jessica Aitkenhead wrote: "By midnight hordes of drunken students were packing the sweaty dance floor, slipping on beer-soaked floors and stumbling over empty pint glasses. The atmosphere was raucous, couples were locked in passionate kisses, and the hit song, 'I Just Can't Get Enough', blared from loud speakers."'They'll have it off anywhere. They're all at it,' claimed a doorman.
