The average distance from home to a test centre increased to 12.33 miles in 2023 - up from 8.33 miles in 2019 - as aspiring drivers are forced to travel further afield to secure a test slot
Learner drivers are resorting to extreme measures to secure an early practical test slot, including travelling hundreds of miles, due to DVSA backlogs. One learner even travelled a staggering 400 miles to avoid the lengthy wait for a local booking, according to recent research.
The average distance from home to a test centre increased to 12.33 miles in 2023, up from 8.33 miles in 2019. Mark Steeples, a driving instructor at Pass Mark School of Driving, described it as "pretty astonishing" that learners might soon need to travel an average of 25 miles just to take a test. Kayla Van Dorsten from Surrey found a six-month waiting list at her local test centre. To pass her test as quickly as possible, Kayla had to travel all the way to Cornwall, where she encountered a number of driving scenarios not typically found in her learning area, reports the Mirror.
