Motorists could be in breach of the Highway Code

A simple act of goodwill to other drivers could land you in trouble. Police have used mobile speed cameras to catch drivers exceeding the speed limit for years. Some people who spot a camera could be tempted to alert other drivers to their whereabouts, but they are technically breaking the law by doing so.

Rule 110 of the Highway Code states: “Only flash your headlights to let other road users know that you are there. Do not flash your headlights to convey any other message or intimidate other road users.” Under Section 89 of the Police Act 1997, classed as obstructing a police officer, it confirms that it is an offence to “wilfully obstruct a constable in the execution of his/her duty'.
