Recent months have seen significant and sometimes controversial changes to road regulations, including the introduction of 20mph speed limits in certain areas of England and Wales and stricter emission standards for some vehicles.
The upcoming legislative agenda suggests this trend of changes will continue, with various vehicle types, including personal cars, buses, and lorries, facing new rules aimed at enhancing safety and reducing emissions. Electric vehicles, which have long benefitted from tax breaks, will not be exempt from these changes. According to the Mirror, EV owners will soon be required to pay vehicle excise duty, commonly known as 'car tax'. From April 1, 2025, electric vehicle drivers will be subject to a new vehicle excise duty rate, moving away from their current zero-rated status. Currently, motorists pay around £190 for cars, £335 for vans, and roughly £25 for motorcycles annually. After April 1, 2025, newly registered EVs will have a first-year rate of £10, ending the tax-free period. Motorists will also face two additional charges in the coming years. From the second year starting in 2026, the annual tax will increase to the standard rate, currently £190 or £335 for commercial vehicles, but this could rise further, according to Lancs Live. Also, from the second year, vehicles costing more than £40,000 will be subject to an Expensive Car Supplement, now a substantial £410, payable for five years. Drivers participating in their employer's salary sacrifice schemes should prepare for increased Benefit in Kind (BiK) taxation. BiK, linked to vehicle excise duty due to its CO2 emissions, has remained constant at 2% since 2022 but is set to rise to 3% in April 2025
