Motorists could be hit in the pocket by as much as £2,745 on new vehicle excise duty change with a host of other new rules coming in next year
A number of significant changes are coming in over the next 12 months and beyond which are set to have a major impact on drivers in the UK - and potentially hit them in the pocket. Some of the biggest differences will come in vehicle excise duty , where electric cars will start paying tax for the first time.
Electric cars registered on or after April 1, 2025 will pay a first-year rate of £10 as opposed to the £0 paid in financial year 2024-25. These cars will also have to pay the Expensive Car Supplement levied on cars with a list price of more than £40,000, which electric vehicles were previously exempt from.

The Association of Optometrists is calling for the law to be changed so that all drivers have their vision checked when they first apply for a driving licence when renewing it and checks every three years for those over 70.

The technology trial was first launched in 2021 by the National Highway.
From April 6, 2025, fully electric vehicles will be subject to a 3% Benefit-in-Kind rate, up from the current 2%. The BiK rate increases in line with the level of CO2 emissions from the vehicle, reaching as high as 37% for cars emitting more than 154g/km CO2.Certificate of Professional Competence is a certificate required by all professional drivers that operate HGVs .
