Drivers could be allowed to continue driving without holding a current driving licence, thanks to a provision in The Road Traffic Act 1988 that the DVLA has explained on its website

Motorists have been informed of a potential workaround to a DVLA rule that could help them when renewing their driving licence. A particular driving regulation can be circumvented by drivers using a loophole when applying to the DVLA for a licence renewal.

The DVLA stated: "If you have a medical condition and have been told not to drive by a doctor or healthcare professional, you should not do so. If your doctor or healthcare professional is unsure about how a medical condition affects driving, they should refer to 'Assessing fitness to drive'." However, when submitting an application for licence renewal, drivers may be allowed to drive before receiving the new licence. The DVLA clarified that once they have received a "correct and complete" application for a new licence and provided that motorists "meet all the Section 88 criteria" they may legally drive, reports Birmingham Live.
