The DVLA updates the list of banned number plates twice a year, in March and September - here's the full list of 74-plate combinations that have been banned by the DVLA

As the switch to the new '74' registration plate is set for September 1, it opens up fresh opportunities for those seeking a personalised number plate for their vehicle. Number plates change twice a year, on March 1 and September 1.

Online car marketplace Carwow revealed that the DVLA produces a list of prohibited plates twice a year - in March and September. This list includes letter and number combinations that reference crime, racism, politics, certain religious aspects, or any term deemed too rude, insulting, inappropriate, or potentially offensive or embarrassing.

Potential references to the conflict in Ukraine have been prohibited on UK number plates, with combinations like NO74 RUS, EU74 WAR, and FK74 RUS being strictly off-limits. Those opposed to low-emission zones won't be able to express their dissent through their plates either, as NO74 LEZ is also banned.
