People have received 'threatening' letters from the DWP demanding they pay up
Hundreds of thousands of DWP benefit claimants have been hit with a surprise bill with some owing up to £20,000. Figures show around 134,800 people owed Carer's Allowance payments to the DWP due to overpayments, as of May this year. A new report from Carers UK has examined the issue, with carers saying they owe debts of between £150 and £20,000, with an average overpayment debt of £4,000.
' 'For others, Carer's Allowance was stopped without warning causing them severe financial difficulties. This is on top of significant unpaid caring responsibilities for older, ill or disabled relatives.' Carer's Allowance is a benefit designed to support individuals who provide care for someone for at least 35 hours a week, provided the person they're caring for is in receipt of certain benefits, such as PIP or Attendance Allowance.
